Busy days, busy nights

I've been meaning to share more of our top books, but we've had busy days and busy nights. The end of the school year is full of celebrations, plays, and (hopefully) sunny days. As a school librarian, it's also the time I make sure our students turn in all their books. We help remind students, perform inventory on our collection, and celebrate a year of reading with the students.

Babymouse #1: Queen of the World! This year, Emerson has gone crazy for the Babymouse series, by Jennifer and Matt Holm. Students in 2nd grade stretched and read this series as part of their reading partner projects. Girls love Babymouse, but so do boys. I've been amazed how many 4th and 5th grade boys adore this, talking about what their favorite book is, putting holds on them so they could read ones their friends liked. Babymouse really reflects the emotional reality and fantasies of kids in elementary school - our students connect with her, know they're not alone in having bad days, and she makes them laugh.

To celebrate the end of the year, I'm bringing treats in to each classroom once all the students in that class have turned in their library books. In Babymouse's honor, our treat this year will be Pink Cupcakes! So take a look at my kitchen counter late tonight:
It will be fun to celebrate with students tomorrow. I've been thrilled by how excited our students have been about reading this year. They've checked out over 13,000 books during the school year (about 43 books per student). There's a lot of book lovin' going on at Emerson!

Cupcakes are homemade with love and gratitude. If you make a purchase using the Amazon links on this site, a small portion will go to Great Kid Books (at no cost to you). Thank you for your support.

  3. Oh, by the way, very interesting stat regarding the number of books checked out per student. If my daughter attended your school, she would have increased your number. She checked out a book nearly every day during the past school year from her school's library!
